Here we are at week two of the One Room Challenge and so far I am feeling good. A lot of progress has been made to the room in just two short weeks. The carpet has been removed, new flooring installed, and the board and batten wall treatment started. We have a set deadline that the walls have to be completed and painted in less than two weeks to make way for the wall paper.
Wall Treatment-Board and Batten
The first step for the walls was to apply MDF sheets to create a smooth wall surface. Our walls have the knock-down texture that would have looked really bad if left as-is in between each vertical wood board. Instead of skim coating the walls, we went with the MDF sheets as they were very thin at only 1/8” thick and would be a lot less work.
Next, was to add the top and bottom trim pieces. This step in the process seemed like a walk in the park and moved quickly compared to the tedious cuts of the MDF sheets around the outlets and window. The hubs and I are splitting up the work with him focusing on the wood cuts and application with me stepping in to complete all of the prep work before we can paint. There is a lot of caulking in my future.
One of the biggest impacts to the room so far was the addition of the trim around the window. Window trim and moulding can transform a space and take your home from looking builder basic to custom. This is a fairly easy DIY project to tackle on your own and low cost. It was only about $40 in materials to trim out this window and did not entail a long list of tools. If you have a jig saw and nail gun you are all set. These are the tutorials we referenced if you are interested in trying this out in your home: Tutorial 1, Tutorial 2. I went with a simple trim design that would blend well with the board and batten panelling pattern.
Paint Selections
Another item checked off the list this week was finalizing the paint color. I pulled many samples from Sherwin-Williams, Behr, and Dunn-Edwards. There are so many great green colors out there, but I did narrow it down to two that looked best with the wallpaper. Here were the two finalist:
Which one do you think I picked? Very subtle difference between the two, but there was one clear winner once I tested each color on the wall. Stay tuned for next week to see the paint color and fingers crossed, the finish board and batten walls. In case you missed it, here is where we started in Week 1. Thank you! I do love a nursery or kids room that is a nice balance of being a little playful and fun but also incorporate design elements a person would enjoy at any age.
