Week 2 is going down for the Spring 2018 One Room Challenge. If you are stopping by for the first time, welcome! You can get caught up here and check out Week 1 to see the before photos and my inspiration for the design.
Unfortunately not much physical progress has been made in the room. Our little man came down with his first cold that turned into a rough respiratory infection that is stressing this first time momma out. Thankfully as of today he is finally sounding a bit better. I was able to finalize my design plan, lighting, and accessories during this time. I am in the progress of ordering all of the items and then this weekend we will hit the ground running.
Design Challenge
The location of my laundry and mudroom is in a corner of the home where there are zero window and it is dark! I absolutely love the layout of my home but this corner is a real bummer. The reason it does not have any windows is due to our 3 car tandem garage. Here is the layout of the house for reference:
As you can imagine the challenge in this space will be to make sure there is enough lighting and finding the perfect wall color. In rooms with no natural light white paint does not look good. The space in its current state looks drab and dingy. To balance out the modern elements with the mix of black and white cabinetry, I plan on painting the walls a warm light gray color. Just enough tone to bring a little contrast and help the light bounce around the area. I found this image via Studio McGee and it just what I was imagining.

The Design Plan
Tile
As I mentioned in last weeks post, my main inspiration for the laundry room is a mosaic pattern tile floor. I will be creating my own design using 6″x7″ matte hexagon black and white tiles. Above the countertop we are adding a backsplash using marble subway tile in a traditional offset pattern.
Vertical Panelling
Vertical paneling will be added to a few of the walls in the laundry and mudroom spaces. I will be following this tutorial from Jenny Komenda over at Little Green Notebook using MDF bender board. In the mudroom space the paneling will be painted black. In the laundry room I will paint the paneling a light warm grey. I love the modern spin on the “shiplap” panelling.
Lighting
As I mentioned above, the biggest challenge with this area is that there is no natural light. The lighting selections have been the items in the room I was having a hard time pulling the trigger. There are so many beautiful options out there that I love it is so hard to choose. The lighting in this section of my home is very critical to get right. To help bring in different layers of lighting and illuminate properly I am adding three sconces in the laundry room in addition to the two existing recessed lights in the ceiling. In the mudroom area I will be installing two pendants and adding two additional recessed lights. The pendants and sconces will be a mix of brass and matte black. I am excited to see how the brass pendants will pop against the black vertical paneling.
Artwork and Accessories
To eliminate the room feeling stark and ultra modern with all the black and white features I am focusing on bringing in artwork and accessories that add pops of color, texture, and have a vintage edge. I love this new landscape from Jenny’s Print Shop which offers awesome affordable printable artwork.
There is nothing that I love more than black, white, wood, and leather so when I found these leather and wood hooks from Shoppe by Amber Interiors I had to incorporate them into the design. Cant wait to pop these babies on the wall.
Week 2 Goals
Here is what I hope to accomplish this weekend and get this room moving along.
- Swatch paint colors, pick the winners, and paint
- Prep for floor tile demo
- Purchase all the items for the space
Check back next week for updates on paint selection and progress in the space. Don’t miss all the other rooms by the featured designers and guest participants.

How fun! We are redoing our laundry room as well and no windows is the downfall of my space too. We chose black and white tiles, wood grain countertops, Shiplap by Magnolia walls and the cabinets will be Silverado Sage by Magnolia. I am so excited to make this space pretty. I hope your little one feels better soon! Also, I see that you are my ‘neighbor’. I live in El Dorado Hills. So hey there!
